Caries treatment

Damage to teeth is caused most often by dental caries.

Dental caries occurs primarily due to insufficient proper oral hygiene and subsequent formation of tooth plaque on the surface of teeth. Plaque contains a large amount of bacteria which disrupt enamel and weaken its hardness. This stage is called demineralization and it manifests itself by a white stain on the tooth. At this moment it is possible to stop the caries without a drill by thorough hygiene and fluoride agents.

If caries is not found soon during a routine check-up, it starts to expand. First, it grows into the enamel layers and then into the dentine and subsequently into the deepest layers where it can cause complications like inflammation of dental pulp. Therefore, if caries is not treated in time, it penetrates to the dental pulp in the pulp cavity, in layman’s terms to the “nerve”, and causes death of the dental pulp and thus also of the whole tooth. High-quality root canal treatment represents a solution of this complication.

Several options can be used for a timely identification of dental caries. The basic options include a routine dental check-up during which a dentist identifies possible changes in the appearance of a tooth either visually or with the help of a dental probe. Another and a very precise option is dental X-ray. Unfortunately, we cannot identify starting caries ourselves by our feelings (pain), because it does not hurt in these stages. This stage is crucial for the treatment of dental caries so that it will not cause considerable losses of dental tissue. Pain becomes apparent when caries spreads in the vicinity of the dental pulp. The affected tooth is sensitive to temperature stimuli, various kinds of food, often to sweet food, and we feel unpleasant sensations which can also include mouth odour.

A dentist treats dental caries with a dental drill. First, he removes all decaying dentine and adjusts the formed cavity (space where there is no dental tissue) into a shape in which the subsequently made filling will properly hold, protect the tooth and ensure the best possible appearance.

Teeth fillings

Currently, several quality filling materials are used to replace lost tooth parts.

They have better mechanical and aesthetic properties, look very natural and, unlike amalgam seals, do not contain mercury.

Composite materials

Modern composite materials, the so-called white fillings, which are suitable for almost all teeth, are used for dental fillings. They are highly aesthetic thanks to the so-called “multilayering” technique of their execution. This technique can be used to achieve a colour which is indistinguishable from natural teeth. They are very often used for the front parts of teeth where they guarantee high-quality results.

Ceramic fillings - onlay

Ceramic fillings represent the best there is in conservative dentistry. They are of a very high quality and perfectly fulfil the aesthetic function. Ceramic fillings are highly resistant and with proper care they have an unlimited life. They do not cause allergic reactions and there is no risk of secondary dental caries. Ceramic fillings are often used in the lateral part when there are larger tooth defects.

Replacement of original amalgam fillings

Old amalgam fillings do not look nice. They have a grey (sometimes even black) colour and the tooth around the filling assumes an unsightly appearance due to the metal corrosion. In some clients this can cause feelings of discomfort and uncertainty. Moreover, dental caries can occur again under old fillings and it can be noticed only in the late stages of the disease. This is why most clients today refuse amalgam (black) fillings and even ask for the replacement of their existing fillings.
